The Challenge

In MRI-guided breast biopsies, precise planning is crucial for safe and successful tissue sampling. Radiologists must accurately locate lesions and determine the optimal positioning of the interventional device.

At the same time, the software used—as a medical device—is subject to stringent regulatory requirements. Added to this are complex geometric calculations that must account for image distortions and magnetic field inhomogeneities. The challenge is further compounded by the wide variety of coil systems, interventional methods, and biopsy instruments that must be reliably supported.

Our Solution

ASTRUM IT supports the ongoing development of planning software for MR-guided breast biopsies. The solution assists radiologists and medical technical staff in planning and performing image-guided tissue biopsies and preoperative wire markings. It also helps ensure that clinical procedures are carried out efficiently and precisely.

Users mark reference points (fiducial markers) and target lesions directly on the MRI images. Based on this information, the software calculates the necessary access coordinates for the interventional device and visualizes the results in a photorealistic image. This image contains all information relevant to planning—patient data, laterality, target ID, device configuration, access path, and coordinates—and is displayed both at the workstation and on the touchscreen in the examination room. The application supports various coil systems, biopsy methods, and instrument types, as well as the planning of multiple lesions within a single workflow.

As part of the project, ASTRUM IT is responsible for the continuous expansion and optimization of the solution. This includes, among other things:

  • Further development of the software in an agile development environment
  • Expansion of automated end-to-end test coverage for quality assurance
  • Integration of new coil systems and biopsy instruments
  • Implementation of configurable device presets
  • Development of features such as automatic marker detection and multi-lesion planning
  • Provision of planning results for displays in the examination room

Specialized Expertise

A key focus is on the development of safety-critical medical device software. In this regard, ASTRUM IT works closely with product management, risk management, quality assurance, regulatory experts, and clinical users.

Comprehensive documentation of requirements, tests, and changes ensures full traceability and supports compliance with relevant quality and regulatory requirements.

Added Value for the Customer

  • Precise and reliable planning of MRI-guided breast biopsies and preoperative wire markings
  • Support for various combinations of devices and instruments
  • Comprehensive consistency checks during planning through detailed result images showing all parameters relevant to the procedure
  • High software quality ensured by comprehensive testing and quality assurance processes
  • Compliance with safety-critical regulatory requirements for medical devices
  • Flexible scalability for new procedures and hardware components
  • A long-term, maintainable, and future-proof solution thanks to modular architecture

Result: The planning software supports medical professionals in safely and efficiently performing MR-guided breast biopsies and wire markings. Through continuous development, the integration of new hardware and modules, and consistent adherence to high quality standards, ASTRUM IT helps to reliably support modern diagnostic and interventional processes.
